I have found that writing a mystery/suspense novel has proven to be a lot harder than I had originally anticipated. Trying to keep the basic story line with the twists and turns of a mystery while also creating personalities that readers can relate to has become quite the challenge. I find it hard to keep the balance between the two. For those of you who have read some of the story, I would welcome any feedback, either positive or negative. I would love to hear what anyone has to say. Every opinion matters.

Finding the Time
A lot of people think that it doesn't take a whole lot of time to write a book. Well, maybe not for Stephen King, but I am a full-time mother of two and I work a full-time job as well. It's not as easy to find time as some people think. And I know that I have been working on this for a long time, but I have also been doing a lot of editing as well. I want this to be a good piece. As a writer, I think I consider myself a perfectionist, I am always finding something that can be a little better or a little more descriptive. So if anyone has any input on the story so far, please let me know what can be done to make this book that much better. I want people to want to read this, so I am asking for any suggestions that anyone might have. Not only on the story itself, but also on the issue of finding time to write. It's really a lot more difficult than some people might think.

To self publish or not, that is the question
I have a good amount of my book written, however, I am uncertain whether I should self publish or pitch it to a known publisher. I have done some research and found that self publishers do get their writing out there and do make money, but I am still conflicted about whether I should do it. If anyone has ever self published or knows someone who has self published, I could really use some input and advice. I am nervous either way and could really use some guidance.

The beginning
During high school, I had a tendency to read a lot of books. A good friend of mine and myself were talking one day about some ideas we had for books we would ever write if we could. We both decided 'Why not?' That was when I started to write "Death by Design". It is a mystery about a string of deaths that started ten years prior to when the story takes place.
I have a lot of influences for this book by different authors. Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton are probably highest on the list, but I did not want my book to sound too much like either one, I have been trying to find that balance between suspense and humor.
I know that I said that I started this in high school. You are most likely thinking that it should not take that long to write a book. To be honest, I actually forgot all about it after high school until I found it in a box while unpacking after about 6 years after I had put it away. After reading it over, I decided to take my writing more seriously.
